Do you know someone with diabetes? Chances are you do, even if you don’t realize it. Diabetes is a chronic disease, which has no cure. North Carolina ranks in the top 25% in diabetes mortality in the U.S., with over 650,000 people afflicted. Each day in North Carolina about 15 people die as a result of diabetes or its complications. Diabetes kills nearly 200,000 Americans every year. It is the fourth leading cause of death by disease in the U.S. The rate of major congenital malformations and death of a fetus and newborn are 2-4 times greater for women with diabetes. To fight this debilitating disease, Skywater Building Co. participated in the first annual Keys to a Cure event.
The Maison d’Espoir, a 7000 square-foot home worth 1.5 million dollars, was graciously built by Skywater Building Co. of Raleigh and their friends, and sold with the proceeds directly benefiting those with diabetes. Planned by those with diabetes and those who care about someone with diabetes, Keys to a Cure resulted in an important historic event for the fundraising for diabetes research.
